Diabetic Shoes for Men & Women

What Are Diabetic Shoes?

Diabetic shoes, also known as therapeutic or added-depth shoes, are typically a type of comfort shoe.

They will always have enough depth to accommodate an insert if needed, always be seamless or have smooth seams and lining, always have a closure like Velcro or laces to be secure and safe, and always be available in at least three widths to properly accommodate most foot shapes.

Why Would I Need Them?

Many people with diabetes suffer from some common side effects of diabetes and, many times, wear and tear of the feet.

Neuropathy is common and causes numbness, which causes difficulty in protecting the feet.

Bunions, toe deformities, fallen arches, swelling, and many other conditions cause difficulty with fitting. Plantar callousing on the feet or corns or callousing on the toes is very common also.

Diabetic complications are the number one cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputation in the United States.

It pays to take care of your feet!

Does Medicare Cover Diabetic Shoes?

This is one of the questions we get most often and the answer is yes, with a few things worth understanding before you come in.

Medicare Part B covers one pair of diabetic shoes plus insoles per calendar year for qualifying patients. To qualify your doctor needs to certify that you have diabetes and at least one of the following: peripheral neuropathy with evidence of callus formation, a history of pre-ulcerative calluses, a history of previous ulceration, foot deformity, previous amputation of the foot or part of the foot, or poor circulation. If that sounds like your situation, there is a good chance you qualify and we can help you figure out the process.

Here is what makes working with us straightforward on the Medicare side. We have been doing this for over 44 years and we work directly with Medicare and most other insurance carriers on diabetic footwear. We handle the billing, we coordinate with your prescribing physician and we walk you through the paperwork so you are not figuring it out on your own. A lot of patients come in having been told by their doctor to get diabetic shoes and not knowing where to start. That is exactly what we are here for.

What you need to bring when you come in. A prescription or referral from your treating diabetic physician, whether that is an MD, DO, DPM, NP, PA or CNS. We have all the required Medicare forms on hand including the Detailed Written Order and the Statement of Certifying Physician for Therapeutic Footwear. If your doctor has not already completed the paperwork we can help coordinate that too.

If you are not on Medicare, most other major insurance plans also cover diabetic footwear to some degree and we work with those carriers as well. And if you are paying out of pocket we keep our pricing affordable because we understand that managing diabetes already comes with enough financial pressure without footwear adding to it.

Idaho's largest in-stock selection of diabetic-approved shoes is right here at our Boise and Nampa locations. Come in, we do a proper foot exam and gait analysis, figure out what your feet actually need and fit you into the right shoe with the right insert. That combination of fit, support and pressure redistribution is what makes the difference for diabetic feet and it is what we have been doing here in the Treasure Valley since 1980.
