Diabetic Shoes and Services
What Are Diabetic Shoes?
Diabetic shoes, also known as therapeutic or added-depth shoes, are typically a type of comfort shoe. They will always have enough depth to accommodate an insert if needed, always be seamless or have smooth seams and lining, always have a closure like Velcro or laces to be secure and safe, and always be available in at least three widths to properly accommodate most foot shapes. Why Would I Need Them?
Many people with diabetes suffer from some common side effects of diabetes and, many times, wear and tear of the feet. Neuropathy is common and causes numbness, which causes difficulty in protecting the feet. Bunions, toe deformities, fallen arches, swelling, and many other conditions cause difficulty with fitting. Plantar callousing on the feet or corns or callousing on the toes is very common also. Diabetic complications are the number one cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputation in the United States. It pays to take care of your feet! What Are the Benefits?
Shoes for diabetics are typically made from softer materials and designed with adjustability and customization for sensitive and hard-to-fit feet. Most are available in very wide to very narrow for proper fit. The usual goal of a diabetic shoe is to reduce or eliminate any and all pressure points. They will have roomy toe boxes with plenty of room and soft, comfortable insoles and linings.Learn more about what to look for when shopping for diabetic footwear by viewing our diabetic shoe guide.
