Plantar Fascittis
Definition:
One of the most common causes of heel pain is plantar fasciitis. This condition develops when the fascia ligament which spans the bottom of the foot from toes-to-heel develops tears and inflammation as a result of too much stress.
Cause:
Causes vary and include an increase in activity, unsupportive shoes, obesity including major and minor weight gains, pregnancy, abnormally high or low arches. Sedentary lifestyle without proper exercise and stretching of the calf muscle. The biggest symptom with plantar fasciitis is pain the heel first thing in the morning which subsides during the day. Pain will usually reoccur after a period of rest such as sitting to eat, watch T.V., or sitting at a desk during your work day.
Treatment and Prevention:
All conservative treatment should include new supportive shoes with custom or over the counter properly fitting foot orthotics. Stretches that target the calf muscle, Achilles tendon and plantar fascia are very helpful. Night splints are also available which help stretch the fascia and calf muscles while sleeping. If the problem persists consult your foot doctor.
